My
Journey to Doodles
I
became fascinated with Labradoodles
when researching a new family dog. Wow –
lots of information out there – Multi-generation,
F1, Back-crosses…!!! It was difficult to
make sense out of all of the information,
and I truly wasn’t sure what the deal was
with these guys from Down Under. Lab x Poodle
equals Doodle, right? I found that in some
respects yes, that’s true, and in others,
no it isn’t. The origins of all Labradoodles
is, of course with the Lab and the Poodle.
They all bring a terrific combination of
intelligence,
devotion
and the hope of an allergy friendly/non-shedding
coat to the table in varying degrees.
That
having been said, I can tell you first hand
that there is a huge difference between
my F1 (first generation) Labradoodle and
my Australian Labradoodle. Now, don’t take
that the wrong way, Dooley is adored just
like Polly. He is a fantastic pet, just
like she is. However, their look and structure,
along with their coats and temperament,
are very different. Dooley does shed quite
a bit – Polly not at all.
Of
course, even Australian Labradoodles can
shed. They are not guaranteed to be allergy
friendly for everyone, and there certainly
are several sizes, colors and coat types.
It is important to note that they are a
developing breed, however, there is a fair
amount of consistency and predictability.
It seems that after the many years of carefully
selected breeding and research of Labradoodles
in Australia, a wonderful breed has emerged.
A phenomenal family pet - with a pretty
cool look to boot!
Note:
For those of you new to this, an F1 is a
puppy from a Lab bred to a Poodle, a multi-gen
is the result of years of research and select
breeding in Australia where Labradoodles
have been bred to Labradoodles.
